The designer of one of the most iconic logos in rock and roll, Arturo Vega, died Saturday. Friend Legs McNeil, author of Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, announced Vega’s death.
Vega created the “Hey Ho Let’s Go” seal that has become so recognizable on all Ramones gear. In addition to being a designer, he also served as the Ramones’ artistic director and later, their archivist and historian. Vega was a good friend of the band and even let Joey and Dee Dee Ramone bunk with him in his loft on the Bowery before the release of their first album.
“One of the best friends anyone could ever hope for,” McNeil said of Vega on Facebook. “I knew and hung out with Arturo since 1976—37 fucking years, if my math is correct—and if it weren’t for Arturo, Joey and I would’ve starved to death in those early years. Artie was so fucking fun; he made everything into an adventure … I miss him so much already.”
No cause of death has been given. Vega was 65 years old.
