Justin Vernon, better known as Bon Iver, released a video of himself covering Spoon‘s “Inside Out” as a promotion for the first ever Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival, set to take place on July 17-18 in Vernon’s hometown of Eaux Claires, WI.
Vernon’s take is noticeably more spare than the original, which appeared on Spoon’s 2014 album They Want My Soul. Seated at a piano, outside, under a full moon and surrounded by lights, Vernon’s spare rendition strips the song down to its basic essence, free of the pulsing bass and lush production flourishes of Spoon’s original version. Recording everything with a single mic, Vernon provides a haunting reading of the song that becomes all the more spooky whenever the microphone picks up gusts of wind and runs them through the same effects as the vocals and piano.
The Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival will be curated by Vernon and the National’s Bryce Dessner. In addition to Bon Iver and the National, Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, the Tallest Man on Earth, Poliça, Sturgill Simpson and Sylvan Esso are among the acts set to appear.
