For his last week of shows, David Letterman has been inviting his favorite performers from over the years to come by and play on the show one last time. Last night, it was Ryan Adams’ turn, and the alt-country singer dug into his back catalog to dust off the first song he ever played on the show. Adams first appeared on the show in 2001, when he played the Demolition track “Starting To Hurt.” Now, a cleaned-up, wiser Adams pulled the song out again, much to the delight of Letterman and the audience. As a special treat, Adams heeded Letterman’s request for an encore and tore into “Starting To Hurt” again, this time with the help of Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.
