Delta Deep is a self proclaimed “extreme blues project,” but with so much well-versed talent in one place, it also wouldn’t be a stretch to call the band a supergroup. Formed in 2012 by Def Leppard’s guitarist Phil Collen, the band came together through a string of chance musical encounters. Collen recruited Debbi Blackwell-Cook, who has provided backup vocals for Michale Buble and Luther Vandross, Robert DeLeo, bassist for the Stone Temple Pilots and India.Arie’s drummer, Forrest Robinson.
For the band’s self-titled debut, released June 23rd, the group also brought along Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott and Whitesnake’s David Cloverdale to provide guest appearances on an album that blends elements of rock with a serious helping of traditional Delta blues.
The band has just released a lyric music video for their first single, “Bang The Lid,” which takes off like a shot thanks to wailing guitars and stomping percussion. The lyric video also strengthens and visually complements the true, blues heart of the track: singer Blackwell-Cook’s powerhouse vocals, front and center, which she takes whips through growling low notes and piercing highs with remarkable control.
