Do you love jazz? Or do you often wonder why the hell so many smart people love jazz?
Either way, come to Lincoln Center on Wednesday, June 12, when a panel of witnesses and enthusiasts will play selections and display historical images from Blue Note/UMe’s new Miles Davis collection, The Complete Birth of the Cool, engaging in a discussion filled with musical revelations and historical insights—and answers to some of your questions.
On hand will be saxophonist Lee Konitz (the last surviving member of the original Birth of the Cool lineup); arranger/composer David Amram; trumpeters Keyon Harrold (player of all the trumpet parts in Don Cheadle’s biopic on Miles Davis, Miles Ahead); trumpeter Ingrid Jensen; bandleader and Gil Evans expert Don Cheadle, along with moderator Ashley Kahn, discussing The Complete Birth of the Cool chronicles the brief yet monumental importance of the Miles Davis Nonet.
To be released on June 7, The Complete Birth of the Cool will arrive in 2LP vinyl, CD, and digital formats. The collection includes the twelve sides they recorded, all newly remastered from the original 1949 analog tapes for the first time since 1957, as well as the ensemble’s only extant live recordings, recorded at the Royal Roost in 1948. The 2LP vinyl package includes a booklet filled with archival photographs and an extensive new essay by GRAMMY®-winning American music historian Ashley Kahn.
Learn about jazz from originators and scholars in a lively discussion punctuated by groundbreaking music.
