Country legend Mel Tillis is recovering at home in Nashville after undergoing a heart procedure last weekend. Sources close to Tillis described the procedure as “routine” and expect the 81-year old to recover fully.
News of Tillis’ condition broke via a statement issued by his daughter and fellow country singer Pam Tillis, who seemed optimistic about her father’s prospects. “In typical Mel Tillis fashion, he’s already cutting up and cracking jokes with the nurses,” she said.
Over the course of his long career, Tillis had numerous hits both as a performer (“I Believe In You,” “Southern Rains”) and as a songwriter (Kenny Rogers’ “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town,” George Strait’s “Thoughts Of A Fool”). He was named Songwriter of the Decade for two straight decades by BMI, and he received the National Medal of the Arts from President Obama in 2012
