John Mayall brought his current band to the City Winery and brought the house down with a performance that justifies his legendary status. The band consists of Mayall, guitarist Rocky Athas, bassist Greg Rzab and drummer Jay Davenport.
The band played a cross section of songs that have been identified with Mayall throughout his career. The songs allowed the members of the band to stretch out in the performance of solos that showed their skills but also showcased the music. Mayall showed his dexterity with various instruments by playing guitar, keyboard and harp throughout the set.
The set started with the following songs – “Congo Square” a song about the famous open space in New Orleans;, “Sum of Something” which appears on many of Mayall’s albums and the traditional standard ” Early in the Morning”. Additionally, the band played “Help Me” and “Heartache” from the album John Mayall Plays John Mayall; the jazzy song “ Like a Fool,” That’s All Right,” “Blues for Lost Days,” and other selections from Mayall’s vast catalogue.
Mayall promised the audience a completely different show on the following night; considering the vast scope of his repertoire, that was probably a very easy task.
