Stax/Volt are coming into the 21st century. The venerated soul and R&B label will be releasing two new singles collections featuring music that has never been available digitally before. The first of these collections, The Complete Stax/Volt Singles: Vol. 2, will be available on December 16th; the second, Volume 3, comes out in the spring of 2015.
The compilations pick up where 1991’s The Complete Stax/Volt Singles: 1959-1968 left off, pulling together some of the label’s biggest releases from 1969 to 1975. Among the artists included in the compilation are Isaac Hayes (“Theme From Shaft“), The Staple Singers (“I’ll Take You There”), Albert King, Jean Knight, Johnnie Taylor, Shirley Brown, and more. Many of these songs will also be made available online for the first time in the digital release of both compilations.
The time period that the compilations cover is an interesting time in the history of Stax/Volt, when they found themselves an independent label after their deal with Atlantic Records ended. The label continued turning out hits, and Isaac Hayes won a Grammy while on the label, but the label’s distribution became a problem, and the label was eventually shuttered in 1976.
