J. Tillman has been recording music for over a decade, but his recently released album, I Love You, Honeybear, is only the second studio release under his popular moniker Father John Misty, a follow-up to 2012’s Fear Fun.

A tragically romantic, wounded yet hopeful, folksy crooner, Father John Misty has become known for his lush, poetic lyrics with thematics that teeter on the heartbroken, wistful, and nostalgic. For Valentine’s Day, Tillman tackled a famous track from another band known for their dark sensibilities on love, covering Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.”

Tillman’s plaintive, agile voice lends the track an earnest and heart wrenching clarity, a hauntingly pared down cover in contrast with the more complex songs from his album.
