Artist: Kinky Friedman
Album: The Loneliest Man I Ever Met
Label: Avenue A Records
Release Date: 10/02/2015
Kinky Friedman is something. He has over four decades of experience under his belt and black cowboy hat. He’s a singer, a songwriter and certainly known for some of the best/bad-ass outlaw country songs. After running for governor of Texas and writing a host of novels and magazine columns, Friedman is returning to music with his first album of original material in 39 years.
The Loneliest Man I Ever Met is a personal, story-telling album filled with descriptive tunes, glass-raising tales and topics to ponder when the album is over. Track four, “My Shit’s Fucked Up,” is a Warren Zevon cover that Friedman uses as an allegory to current world issues. Though not original material, it’s perhaps a way to explain Friedman’s close to forty-year absence in the music scene.
Friedman said in an interview recently that the best song he’s ever written is always the next one. Following track four is “Lady Yesterday,” which truly is a beautiful song and could easily be a fan favorite. Of course, the entire album is a sweet welcome back. Fans of Friedman will enjoy the sentiments he expresses here in both the originals and the covered material.
