For Tasha Taylor, the apple truly didn’t fall from tree. As the daughter (and junior tour-mate) of R&B Stax legend Johnnie Taylor, she was born with music rooted deep in her blood, and today she’s out to prove to a new generation of music listeners that R&B isn’t just relevant, it’s also sexy. Honey For The Biscuit, Taylor’s third release, is out today on Ruf Records, and it does just that.
Today, Elmore is exclusively streaming the album, which is guaranteed to get you grooving from the first note to the last. Taylor’s 13 tracks are chock full of lyrical honesty, culled from the ups and downs in the singer, songwriter and actress’ life, running the emotional gamut from infatuation to frustration, love to loss, and everything in between.
The album also boasts serious, A-list guest appearances, with Keb’ Mo’ lending his vocals to the exuberant, horn heavy “Family Tree.” Tommy Castro takes the mic on funky album closer, “Same Old Thing,” while Robert Randolph brings his lap steel talents to the doo-wop, hand clap laced “Little Miss Suzie.” Samantha Fish joins Taylor for the fierce, sass-heavy “Leave That Dog Alone,” a song about a man that done wrong; “He wouldn’t stop messing around on me/I had to throw is stuff out on the street.”
Taylor’s stunning, versatile vocals ground the album from cut to cut, and it’s remarkable the emotion she can convey using only her pipes. She shows her sensual side with “One and Only,” entreating a lover to “come on home.” “I Knew” is infused with longing, while “How Long” carries a side of Nashville twang.
Honey For The Biscuit allows her ample talents to shine in R&B, soul, blues and beyond, and one listen will have you convinced—Tasha Taylor is here to stay.
