Country star Vince Gill has been a music industry pro for his entire career, but his recent separation from longtime label MCA Records has got him talking about what he misses from the music he loves. In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Gill lamented over the current state of country music, saying that current country acts are missing something important.

“For me, [current country music] has lost its traditional bent pretty severely,” Gill told the Post-Gazette. “I would love to hear someone write a song like George Jones’ ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’ rather than ‘You’re hot, I’m hot, we’re in a truck.’ It’s just mind-numbing.”

The respected singer/songwriter, who is going on tour with a band featuring many former bandmates of the late Earl Scruggs, also had doubts about the current path down which the music industry is headed: “The devaluation of music and what it’s now deemed to be worth is laughable to me. My single costs 99 cents; that’s how much a single cost in 1960. On my phone, I can get an app for 99 cents that makes fart noises–the same price as the thing I create and speak to the world with.”

“Creative brains are being sorely mistreated,” Gill added.

Gill hopes to remind audiences of country music’s roots on a 12-city bluegrass tour through the Southeastern United States this summer. The artist also plans to continue making music, specifically with the Time Jumpers, his Western swing band. It’s safe to say, then, that being dropped isn’t going to stop Gill from singing the truth.
