Raised in Texas and now residing in Virginia, Americana songwriter Lora Kelley was musically raised on 10,000 Maniacs, Tracy Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, Patty Griffin and Joni Mitchell. Now this wife and mother of two has a new, self-titled album reflecting her Southern roots and her experiences as a grown woman who deals with our human experience good-naturedly, but with grit.
“Good Men Don’t Hurt You” reflects friendly advice in love and support for women. A playful and poignant ditty with a nod to the current cultural landscape of the #MeToo movement, it tracks the story of a young girl, and her dialogue with the song’s narrator.
Kelley told Elmore, “It’s not really the day and age where labels like ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are helpful categories. But, for this particular story of Alice, I feel like she (being kind of an extension of myself and friends I’ve known over time) needed a super-clear declarative statement.
“We have so many examples of men in culture who abuse their power and position at the expense of women, and this felt like a simple way to say ‘Consider the fruit of goodness. Hurting someone does not align with that.’ It’s true that good men don’t hurt you..
“The chorus came to me in the shower, trying to figure out how to make a definitive statement that cut through the confusion and gaslighting going on in the media about the #MeToo movement. I had a couple of stronger iterations, but when I sat down to write Alice’s story, I felt simultaneously playful and sad. Before we even get to ‘technical’ sexual abuse—there are a myriad of small infringements that we endure. And her story, simple and true, felt like a better entry point for the title.”
