How do you follow up an album that is regarded by many music fans as one of the greatest albums of all time? If you’re My Bloody Valentine, you wait a really long time before releasing any new material. Then you wait a little longer. The influential shoegaze band haven’t released any new material since their 1991 album Loveless, and the band’s 2008 reunion hasn’t produced any new material that has reach the ears of fans craving more. However, bandleader Kevin Shields announced that My Bloody Valentine will have a new record out by the end of this year.
Shields had promised new MBV material in the past, claiming that the long-awaited follow-up to Loveless was in the works but offering little in terms of recorded evidence. However, this is the first time Shields has given himself a definite deadline, and he also claims that the band’s shows in Tokyo next year will feature new material. In an interview with NME, Shields claimed that the new material could be considered “stranger” than the band’s earlier work, but he added that “people who like us will immediately connect with something” on the album.
Keep your fingers crossed that we have more than two My Bloody Valentine records to listen to by December 31st.
