Dark Star Orchestra
Tea Leaf Green
Governors Island, NY

A breathtaking ferry ride across the Harbor, the Highline Ballroom Governors Island Concert Series is a vacation for many New Yorkers. Once a refuge for George Washington's men and later a U.S. Coast Guard base, Governors Island now lends its wide open space and spectacular skyline views to these jam band showcases. Opening for Dark Star Orchestra, Tea Leaf Green's 40-minute set warmed up the already sweltering concert-goers. From fan favorite "Incandescent Devil" to material from their new album Raise Up the Tent, TLG impressed all, but deadheads, who made up most of the crowd, were there for Dark Star's four-hour jam.

Crowd pleasers of DSO's first set included "Ramble on Rose" and "Tennessee Jed," although, with the chilled out vibe in the air, it seemed little could displease this audience. Jerry Garcia incarnate John Kadlecik displayed precise Garcia-esque guitar work on "Cassidy" and "Estimated Prophet." After their intermission, the band swung into action with the rousing "Dancing In the Streets," a surprising cover for this cover band, but it proved the perfect remedy for the audiences' lulled energy. DSO's tightly crafted harmonies, showcased throughout, left a lasting impression with encore, "Brokedown Palace." There's little doubt that Dark Star provides an invaluable service to new generations of Dead fans hoping to experience the legendary live shows that have become the band's legacy.
