Shea Stadium was built in 1964 when the 15-year-old Joel’s musical ambitions were crystallized by the Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Some 44 years later and 100 million records sold, he was chosen to perform the final concert before Shea’s demolition. The concerts occurred on July 16 & 18 of 2008 in front of 110,000 fans. The songs come from his own catalogue, along with nods to guest stars Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, John Mayer, Paul McCartney, Steven Tyler, Roger Daltrey and John Mellencamp. The exuberance of the audience was a fitting acknowledgement of both the singer and the stadium!
