David Gahr was one of music’s most under-appreciated photographers. Starting in 1958 when Moses Asch of Folkaways Records brought his work to a larger audience, Gahr captured several images of some of the greatest musicians of our time, including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Johnny Cash, and Miles Davis. Starting October 26th, the public will have a chance to see the photographer’s best work in person; the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City is hosting the exhibition David Gahr: The Legacy of a Master Photographer.
Gahr’s most famous work often appeared on the covers of albums; he took the photos that grace the covers of Bruce Springsteen’s The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle and Miles Davis’ A Tribute to Jack Johnson. The gallery, though, promises to feature photos less ingrained in the public consciousness; most of these will be available for the first time in a size larger than 8″x10″.
Joel Siegel, friend of Gahr’s and executor of his estate, had this to say about his work: “The world has yet to appreciate the breadth of [David’s] work. A gallery owner once told me ‘David Gahr is the best kept secret in the history of photography.’ I think that’s true. Hopefully this show is the beginning of letting the world know how great of a photographer David was, for those who don’t already know.”
David Gahr: The Legacy of a Master Photographer will be at the Morrison Hotel Gallery (124 Prince Street, New York, NY) from October 26 to November 11th. Visit www.morrisonhotelgallery.com for more info.
