Oklahoma art-rockers the Flaming Lips have done their fair share of interesting and strange projects over their 25-year career. They’ve set Guinness world records. They’ve released a vinyl record made partially with human blood. And singer Wayne Coyne has a habit of performing inside of a giant plastic bubble. Their latest project, while more conventional than some of their previous endeavours, but it’s still a little off the beaten path: a full-album cover of King Crimson’s In The Court Of The Crimson King.
The Lips have been big prog fans for a while, and they’ve already tried something like this: they released a full-album cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon in 2010. Like that project, their version of Court (which bears the title Playing Hide And Seek With The Ghosts At Dawn) includes collaborations with like-minded artists such as Linear Downfall, Spaceface, New Fumes, and White Dwarfs. The album was “unofficially” released in October, but the extremely limited vinyl run didn’t extend past a few independent record shops. The songs are expected to be available for sale online soon, but you can stream the album on the Flaming Lips’ Satellite Heart Radio.
Some of the band’s involved have suggested that the Lips intend to continue their cover series by possibly offering unique takes on The Who’s Tommy, Can’s Tago Mago, The Grateful Dead’s Anthem Of The Sun, or something else entirely. With these guys, you can never really tell.
