Many attempts have been made at making a film based on the life of Marvin Gaye, but few of them have managed to get off of the ground. However, documentarian Julien Temple (The Filth & The Fury, Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten) seems to have a good chance at getting the job done. Temple’s production has supposedly acquired the rights to Gaye’s music (without which there wouldn’t be much of a film), and an actor has been cast to fill the role of Marvin himself: Lenny Kravitz.
Kravitz is becoming more and more of a presence in film, starting with a well-received turn in 2009’s Oscar nominee Precious and a supporting role in this year’s smash hit The Hunger Games. In the upcoming film, Kravitz is set to portray Gaye during the early 1980s, when the singer bottomed out after years of addiction and unsuccessful albums. No word yet on when the movie is set to come out, but picking a musician to play Marvin Gaye is an interesting casting choice.
