The end of the year means one thing in the music industry: time to hand out awards and accolades to all of the albums we really liked. In the spirit of things, the folks at the Grammy’s announced their nominees last night, and there were a few surprises.
Folk superstars Mumford & Sons continue to get nomination love from the Grammys, as their album Babel (which we found to be a little disappointing, to be honest) was nominated for both Album of the Year and Best Americana Album; their single “I Will Wait” was nominated for Best Rock Song, which is a bit surprising, but the Grammys have always played fast and loose with genre definition. Elsewhere, Jack White’s excellent Blunderbuss and The Black Keys’ El Camino both received Album of the Year nods, while the Keys’ single “Lonely Boy” received a Record of the Year nod.
Two other Elmore favorites, Dr John’s Locked Down and Shemeika Copeland’s 33 1/3, were both nominated for Best Blues Album, while the Goat Rodeo Sessions album-recorded with Chris Thile and Yo-Yo Ma, among others, received a nomination for Best Folk Album.
The Grammys air on CBS on February 10th. You can read the full list of nominees here.
