Tonight’s 12-12-12 Sandy Benefit Concert has a star-studded lineup, but none may be more surprising than the big reunion announced today: it is rumored that the surviving members of Nirvana (Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear) will play together at the concert tonight for the first time in 20 years. Who will be filling the role of the deceased Kurt Cobain, you ask? None other than Paul McCartney. Yes, Paul McCartney.
The idea came when McCartney was invited to jam with “a couple of mates.” Those mates ended up being Grohl’s former bandmates, though McCartney didn’t know it at the time. In an interview with the Guardian, McCartney said, “I didn’t know who those guys were…somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
Sources say that McCartney and Nirvana will be playing a “new song,” so anyone interested in hearing the Beatle try his hand at “Smells Like Teen Spirit” will be disappointed. McCartney’s reps are now refusing to comment on whether or not the rumored collaboration will happen; you’ll have to tune in tonight to find out.
