Vampire Weekend have announced via Twitter that they will release their long-awaited third album on May 7th of this year. As of now, the album has no official title, though band members have referred to it as “LP3” online.
The three-year break between albums is the longest the band have taken since their self-titled debut in 2008. In an interview with Rolling Stone, singer/guitarist/songwriter Ezra Koenig said that the recording process for this record was harder than it had ever been: “There was a certain point where we knew deep down that it wasn’t quite right. We knew it could be better.” Koenig also said that the new record would introduce new elements into the band’s signature sound, adding in more piano and acoustic guitar. “Things that we found boring in the past started to sound more fresh,” Koenig said.
The as-of-yet untitled Vampire Weekend album comes out on May 7th on XL Recordings. Watch the band play a new song, “Unbelievers”, on Jimmy Kimmel Live! below:
