Iggy Pop and The Stooges are returning with their first album since the death of guitarist/bassist Ron Asheton in 2009. With Asheton’s death, Iggy brought in his former guitarist and songwriting partner James Williamson, who played on the scuzz-rock classic Raw Power, and the end result, Ready To Die, is slated to come out on April 30th on Fat Possum Records. Joining Iggy and Williamson are bassist Mike Watt (who played on the last Stooges album The Weirdness and broke ground in the seminal punk group The Minutemen) and drummer Scott “Rock Action” Asheton.
“My motivation behind making any record with the group at this point is no longer personal,” Iggy said in a statement about the new album. “It’s this pigheaded fucking thing I have that a real fucking group, when they’re an older group, they make fucking records. They don’t just go out on stage and twiddle around and make a bunch of fucking money and go ‘oh, it wouldn’t be as good!’ This isn’t the fucking Smashing Pumpkins with the bald guy and whoever…The Stooges are a real group.” As long as it’s better than The Weirdness, Iggy, we’ll be good.
