It’s safe to say that Mumford & Sons have gotten very far by staying the course, musically. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, as their songs are still good and appealing, but Babel sounded a lot like Sigh No More in a lot of ways, and you have to wonder if they can risk making a similar sounding album again. According to Mumford keyboardist Ben Lovett, we won’t have to worry about that.
“I do feel like we’re ready to make the departure,” Lovett said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “There’s definitely cohesion between those two albums, and now that we’ve done that, we’re not desperate to walk away from that sound, but we’re willing to explore what else we could do.”
What does that entail, exactly? Lead singer Marcus Mumford has made mention of incorporating electric guitars and synthesizers into the band’s repertoire in the past, so perhaps are more rocking album is in store for the Mumfords. Marcus has also mentioned wanting to rap on the next album, but let’s hope that that was just a joke.
