Deadline Hollywood reports that Lenny Kravitz has dropped out of the starring role in the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic, which is slated to start filming later this month. Kravitz will be replaced by former Law & Order star Jesse L. Martin.
Kravitz was cast in the biopic, currently titled Sexual Healing, in November. The casting decision drew criticism from Gaye’s son Marvin III, who threatened to take legal action if Kravitz wasn’t dropped from the film. There is currently no indication that this was the reason behind Kravitz leaving the film.
Sexual Healing, which will be directed by documentarian Julien Temple (The Filth & The Fury, Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten), focuses on Gaye’s attempt to reboot his career and stave off addiction with the help of British music producer Freddy Cousaert, who will be played by Brendan Gleeson. There is no projected release date for the film at this time.
