Smith Westerns are a favorite of ours; we named them one of our 11 Bands To Watch way back in 2011, and we raved about their album Dye It Blonde from that same year. If you haven’t heard Dye It Blonde, please correct that as soon as you can. If you have, get excited because the band are putting out a new album, entitled Soft Will, later this year!

If the new single “Varsity” is any indication, Soft Will could be a bit of a departure from the garage rock-meets-Gram Parsons sound that they’ve built over their previous two records. The band ride a synth hook for most of the mid-tempo song, and synths swirl around the song before the band’s signature guitars finally burst through. It’s an interesting song that bodes well for what could be a very interesting album for the band.
