Touring with pop star Pink seems a little out of place for a band like The Hives, who seem more at home in a dank and dreary rock club than at Madison Square Garden. While Irving Plaza isn’t quite a dive bar in the Lower East Side, it will suffice for an evening of great rock music from Sweden’s best rock band who happen to wear matching suits a lot. (Okay, there isn’t a lot of competition there, but it’s gotta be worth something.)
Their new album, Lex Hives, came out last year and rocks as properly as anything they’ve done. After experimenting with new, pop-friendly sounds on the Pharrell-produced Black & White Album, Lex Hives is a welcome return to the hard-driving garage punk that broke them to a larger audience. If you’re raring to rock out to “Hate To Say I Told You So” again, don’t miss out on this one.
