Harper Simon gets nostalgic in his new video for “99.” A vintage-feeling collection of footage that fades and meshes together, the video has Simon longing for a past love whom he had 14 years ago.
If you’re not familiar with Simon, then you probably know his father, music great Paul Simon. And Harper’s not totally new to the music biz himself; in addition to having shared bills with Iggy Pop and Eric Clapton, Simon has also performed with Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono’s Plastic Ono Band and Daniel Merriweather and released two solo albums. As far as his musical taste goes, he looks for inspiration in every direction.
“As a guitar player, I’m just as comfortable playing honky tonk or fingerpicking folk-y stuff as I am playing a Ramones riff or a Ron Asheton-style solo,” he said. “I like Little Richard, the Kinks, Big Star, Hank Williams and the Pixies and Television and Muddy Waters and T. Rex. I like the Who and I like X. I like it all.”
His self-titled debut came out in 2010. “99” comes off of his sophomore album, Division Street, which was released in March. Simon will be playing a couple of cities this summer. He’ll be heading to the Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 9 and the Bowery Ballroom on July 10. You can watch the video for “99” below.
