It’s taken Johnny Marr a little longer than expected to get his post-Smiths solo career off the ground, especially when you consider that his former bandmate Morrissey’s solo career started immediately after the Smiths’ breakup. Now, however, Marr has gotten things on track with a new album, The Messenger. Inevitably, though, in any talk about Marr, the same question comes up: are the Smiths ever getting back together.
That’s the question that Rolling Stone asked Marr, and the guitarist admitted that it’s a question he’s gotten used to at this point. “I’ve been asked about a reunion about 8,936 times,” Marr told RS. “I don’t mind, though. I can understand people asking it, even if they’re not listening to the answer.” That answer, the one thing that both Morrissey and Marr can agree on at this point, hasn’t changed over the years: not a chance. Marr even contemplated telling reporters to “Google it” if he gets that question in the future.
In the meantime, Marr is still on tour behind The Messenger and has even taken to playing some of his old Smiths songs in concert. Below, you can watch a video of Marr performing “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” at this year’s Coachella festival:
