Folk duo The Civil Wars went on an indefinite hiatus in 2012, citing “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” However, that hasn’t stopped them from announcing the follow-up to their hit debut album Barton Hollow. The band’s second album, simply titled The Civil Wars, has been slated for release at an unspecified date during the summer.
Singer/guitarist John Paul White and singer Joy Williams released separate statements announcing the release of the album. Both thanked fans for being patient during the band’s hiatus, but neither mentioned anything about possibly touring or recording together again. Tellingly, both White and Williams avoided referring to the band very much at all, implying that their differences still haven’t been reconciled.
Before the hiatus, the band seemed to be on an unstoppable upward trajectory, collecting Grammys for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group in 2012. Their last officially released recording was a collaboration with pop superstar (and vocal Civil Wars fan) Taylor Swift for the Hunger Games soundtrack.
