When Jack White started Third Man Records, you have to believe that he was drawing inspiration from the legendary Sun Records for a few things: the Tennessee location, the fondness for the color yellow, and, of course, a love of vinyl. Therefore, it only makes sense that Third Man is joining with Sun Records to re-release some of the venerated label’s earliest singles on 7″ vinyl this year.
The first releases for what we hope is a long partnership between the two labels are few of Sun’s earliest hits: Rufus Thomas’ “Bear Cat” (which still lists Lieber & Stoller as songwriters due to a lawsuit), “Just Walking In The Rain” by the Prisonaires (the label’s first real hit single), and Johnny Cash’s “Get Rhythm.” All three singles will be issued with replicas of the original Sun Records sleeve.
Pre-orders for the first collection of Sun re-issues are available on the Third Man Records website. The singles will be available in stores on May 21st.
