On Saturday, May 11, Willie Nelson was awarded with an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Nelson, who Berklee President Roger H. Brown called the “hippest octogenarian on planet Earth,” was honored during the school’s commencement ceremony alongside Carole King and Annie Lennox. The 2013 Commencement Concert was held at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. Nelson hit the stage with a huge student orchestra and played some of his own standards. Later on, he welcomed his friend Kris Kristofferson to the stage, and the two performed a version of Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya (On the Bayou).” In recent years, Berkelee has also awarded honorary degrees to Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and Burt Bacharach, among others.
