Bassist Kim Deal has quit the Pixies, the alt-rock band announced. “We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the past 25 years,” the band said on their Facebook page. “Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”
Deal joined the band in 1986 and played under the alias of Mrs. John Murphy for Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. Popular Pixies songs include “Where is my Mind?,” “Here Comes Your Man” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven.” The band has had a notoriously rocky time over the years; the tension between Deal and frontman Black Francis led to a messy breakup in 1993. They reunited in 2004 and set out touring again.
Deal also formed the Breeders in the early ʼ90s during the Pixies’ hiatus. Deal has recently been touring with the Breeders as they celebrated the release of the 20th anniversary edition of 1993’s Last Splash.
