The Detroit Masonic Temple and its Cathedral Theater were almost closed for good when an anonymous donor paid the temple’s back taxes. A report in the Detroit Free Press revealed the donor to be none other than Detroit native Jack White.
“Jack’s donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it,” said Detroit Masonic Temple Association President Roger Sobran. “Jack’s magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words.” In White’s honor, the temple’s Cathedral Theater will be renamed the Jack White Theater.
White’s connection to the Detroit Masonic Temple stretches back to his childhood days, when his mother worked there as an usher. White also performed at the temple a number of times with the White Stripes.
