Soul legend Lester Chambers was assaulted onstage yesterday during the Russell City Hayward Blues Festival. According to a Facebook post by his son Dylan, Lester was attacked during a performance after he dedicated a rendition of “People Get Ready” to Trayvon Martin. The singer was taken to a hospital shortly thereafter. According to his son, Chambers is in “ok” condition following the attack.
This attack comes after Chambers overcame several hardships while attempting to release his first album in 40 years. The singer has had to deal with several health problems and financial problems stemming from long-overdue royalty payments. Recently, the Sweet Relief Musician’s Fund successfully raised money to help Chambers with his living arrangements, and entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian raised over $60,000 on Kickstarter to help Chambers record a new album.
Chambers’ Facebook has become inundated with well-wishers and condolences in the past 48 hours. You can visit Chambers’ Facebook and leave a message of support here.
