The Mercury Prize is given out every year to the best album produced by a British artist. Normally, the award goes to an up-and-comer, but this year’s list includes a few artists who wouldn’t have much use for the $20,000 cash prize. Topping this year’s Mercury shortlist are David Bowie (who returned after ten years of relative silence with The Next Day) and the Arctic Monkeys (whose AM is winning high praise from artists and listeners.)
Other nominees of note include the much-hyped punk band Savages for their debut album Silence Yourself and folk singer Jake Bugg for his self-titled debut album. Previous winners include the likes of PJ Harvey, Pulp, Franz Ferdinand, and The xx; Arctic Monkeys have a chance at winning the award a second time, having won in 2006 for their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.
