Arcade Fire keep rolling out Reflektor at a slow-yet-exciting pace. So far, we’ve heard the title track, seen them on Saturday Night Live and on the thrillingly weird special they aired after that, and we’ve seen them upstage CMJ with two secret shows in the industrial heart of Brooklyn. Now, with a week until Reflektor finally comes out, they’ve given us another taste with the lyric video for their new song “Afterlife.”
Like its predecessor, “Afterlife” follows the very danceable percussive groove that seems to be a running theme of the record. (The influence of producer James Murphy has been very apparent so far.) Lyrically, it also continues the foreboding, despairing themes that have been part of…well, everything that the Arcade Fire have done so far. Nobody else can make sadness sound as grandiose as the Arcade Fire, and “Afterlife” is an excellent example of that.
You can watch the lyric video for “Afterlife”-complete with footage from the 1959 Portugese film Black Orpheus-below. Reflektor comes out on October 29th on Merge Records.
