After a few quiet years, former Pavement singer/guitarist Stephen Malkmus is returning with a new album, the bizarrely-titled Wig Out At Jagbags. The album is his sixth with his backing band, The Jicks, and his second since his reunion tour with Pavement in 2010. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Malkmus implied that the jammy, Grateful Dead-like vein that the Jicks have mined for much of their career was set aside for a more song-oriented method: “We’ve got more of a 1966, tighten-it-up things,” Malkmus said.
After giving fans in his hometown of Portland a sample of some of the new songs, Malkmus officially released Jagbags‘ first single today. Titled “Lariat,” the single is accompanied by what is ostensibly a lyric video. However, Malkmus – ever the wry prankster – decided to go about making a lyric video in a very different way. You can check out the video below.
Wig Out At Jagbags comes out on January 7th, 2014 on Matador Records.
