Fortunate as I was to have seen Gabriel twice on the original So tours (Madison Square Garden—Dec. 2, 1986, Brendan Byrne Arena—July 17, 1987), I solemnly swear that though “Red Rain” and “Big Time” are oddly absent from the climatic setlist, this is the full glory!
Fully remastered, restored and re-edited from PoV, the 1990 VHS version (which still sits on my shelf), this two-disc set provides a crystalline clarity of sound and vision that gives you a front-row seat to Gabriel’s moment of triumph. The band is at once subtle and ferocious, and the DVD includes the exultant and electrifying opening set by Youssou N’Dour and his band.
The second disc, Play, archives 23 videos spanning Gabriel’s brilliantly singular career, including “Don’t Give Up,” “Kiss That Frog,” “Biko” and “Solsbury Hill.” The set abounds with extras: trailers, interviews, etc. You couldn’t time this one better for the gift-giving season.
