Bobby Womack’s style is so singular and so iconic that it’d be hard to imagine him doing a complete 180 on his sound this late into his career. But that’s just what he did with The Bravest Man In The Universe, his first collaboration with Blur’s Damon Albarn and what Womack considers to be his first real album of new material in 18 years. By melding his own classic soul influences with Albarn’s heady fusion of rock & electronica, Womack has crafted an album that is at once modern and timeless. As great as the album is, the songs really pack a punch in a live setting, and Womack still knows how to bring it on the stage. He’ll be doing a weekend residency at New York’s City Winery.
