Leading with the highlight, guitarists Bill Kirchen and Redd Volkaert kept an overflowing crowd in stitches trading virtuoso licks on acoustic and electric guitars. Both men possess keen senses of humor, and Kirchen is particular is known for his witty songs, but for many of their numbers, neither man had to say a word.  Santo and Johnny’s classic instrumental “Sleep Walk” normally wouldn’t fall into the gutbuster category, but during the ten-or-fifteen minute version Kirchen and Volkaert played last night, the sly musical digs, the subtle (and not-so-subtle) rhythm riffs the two traded had the crowd laughing out loud. Kirchen, an excellent whistler, puckered up for one verse, but even that couldn’t top the unique give-and-take as these two masters traded verses. Truly a performance worth a trip to Kansas City.
