Stephen Malkmus has gotten older, but that doesn’t mean that his sense of humor has matured. In the years since Malkmus disbanded his iconic indie band Pavement, his songs have gotten looser and jammier, but his wry sense of humor has remained intact. Look no further than the title of his latest album with The Jicks, Wig Out At Jagbags. Fortunately, Malkmus puts as much work into writing memorable songs as he does into coming up with inane titles for things, and Jagbags is another example of just how good of a songwriter he can be. Live, Malkmus brings a casual ferocity that flies in the face of the slacker image he purveys, but that’s part of the contradiction of Stephen Malkmus. Come see him at Bowery Ballroom for a night of twisted jams–and a few corny jokes.
