Bob Dylan’s most timeless song is going on the auction block…sort of. A draft of Dylan’s lyrics to “Like A Rolling Stone” is being auctioned off by Soethby’s and is expected to sell for $1 million to $2 million.
The song, written about a debutante cast aside by the upper-class world around which she has built her identity, is widely regarded as one of Dylan’s best songs, and it topped Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
The draft, which is written on hotel stationery from the Roger Smith hotel in Washington, D.C., features a rough collection of what would eventually become the lyrics to the song. The four-page document has a few thrown-out lyric ideas, indicating that Dylan was playing around with different rhyme schemes at the time. The margins of the lyrics are also strewn with doodles.
The draft comes courtesy of an unnamed collector who allegedly got the documents directly from Dylan after meeting him. The draft will be auctioned on June 24th in Sotheby’s rock and pop sale.
