It’s common knowledge at this point that Jack White is a bit of a vinyl geek. How else would you describe a man who went to great lengths to break the Guinness world record for the fastest recording ever released? Therefore, it’s not much of a surprise that White would include some interesting collector-leaning stuff on the vinyl edition of his second solo album Lazzaretto. However, no one expected that White would do what he’s planning to do on the recently announced “ultra LP” version of the album.
First, the vinyl edition of Lazzaretto will contain two hidden tracks that can be played on the center label; one can be played at 78 RPM, while the other can be played at 45 RPM. This could make the vinyl edition of Lazzaretto the first three-speed record ever made. Both side A and side B of Lazzaretto will have a locked groove on the end of each side, and side A will require the listener to place the needle at the center of the album to start playing. One of the side B tracks, “Just One Drink,” will also appear in two versions on the ultra edition of Lazzaretto; the version that you hear will depend on where you place the needle.
Lazzaretto comes out on June 10th via Third Man Records/Columbia. Pre-orders of the “ultra” LP and other editions of the album can be made on the Third Man website. Watch a demonstration of the Lazzaretto ultra LP’s features below:
