Last week, former Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock released a long, damning statement detailing the alleged reasons why he was fired from the Oklahoma psych-rock band. Specifically, he accused singer Wayne Coyne of, among other things, standing up for singer Christina Fallin’s appropriation of Native American iconography and firing Scurlock after the drummer accused Fallin of racial insensitivity. Now, it seems that the other members of the Lips are hitting back at Scurlock’s accusations.
Both Coyne and multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd took to Twitter this weekend to respond to Scurlock’s statement in very different ways. Coyne, ever an indirect person, posted an unattributed quote saying that “fools take a knife and stab a person in the back.” Drozd took the more direct route, saying that Scurlock was fired from the band for “musical differences” and that everything else surrounding this situation has been “blown way out.”
No official statement from the band or Fallin has been released at this time.
