Malik Bendjelloul, the Swedish director and documentarian who won an Academy Award for his film Searching For Sugar Man, died last night in Stockholm. He was 36 years old. Police have not determined the cause of death, but Malik’s brother Johar told the Associated Press that he believes the director committed suicide.
Bendjelloul started his career as a child actor and a reporter in his native Sweden before turning to documentary filmmaking after hearing the story of Rodriguez, the cult-favorite singer/songwriter from the 1970s who released two albums before mysteriously disappearing. Since the release of the documentary, Bendjelloul went on to claim the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and Rodriguez saw a massive resurgence in interest in his music, giving his career a second start.
A representative for Rodriguez told The New York Times that the singer would not be commenting on Bendjelloul’s death at this time.
