This year, fans will get a chance to see the story of Jimi Hendrix put on the big screen with All Is By My Side, which stars Andre 3000 as the guitar god. It’s currently making rounds at various film festivals, and the word has been mostly positive. (We certainly liked it.) However, the film may be having some competition pretty soon, as another long-dormant Jimi Hendrix movie project is being revived.
The tentatively titled Jimi was originally conceived in the late 2000s with United 93 director Paul Greengrass at the helm and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) set to star. However, the film ran into trouble with Hendrix’s family, who disapproved of the film’s portrayal of Jimi and refused to sign over the rights to the story. Now, the film is kicking off again with more involvement from the Hendrix family this time. Mackie is still set to star as Hendrix, but Greengrass is set to be replaced by Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel). Thandie Newton and Noomi Rapace are also set to star.
While the Hendrix family seems to have warmed to Jimi as a film, that’s not a guarantee that they’ll allow Hendrix’s music to be used. We’ll just have to wait and see if Mackie gets to belt out “Hey Joe” on screen.
