New York via Memphis soul band Gedeon Luke and The People are breaking boundaries as they combine classic rock ‘n’ roll with gospel-inspired sounds. Influenced by legends like Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and Al Green, Gedeon Luke and The People build an original sound while staying close to their roots. Their debut album, Live Free & Love (released in June), stands by the band’s message of following your own path and living for love and peace. There are a myriad of ways in which soul music has deviated from its origins, and though Luke and his band haven’t ventured too far from the classic sound, their music has evolved well into the modern era, staying relevant while still paying homage to the greats that paved the way.
At only 25 years old, Gedeon Luke is wise beyond his years, citing his experience growing up in Memphis’ projects surrounded by poverty and crime as the driving force behind his passion for soul and his ongoing faith. Below, listen to “Dreams” (a B-side not included on Live Free & Love), exclusively through Elmore.
