Since the release of their last full-length record nearly six years ago, Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens have been doing what they do best: presenting social awareness at the forefront of their shows and steady touring, including main stages at prestigious music festivals. Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens have premiered the video for “Sinner,” the featured track from Cold World, their new album due out 7/29 via Daptone Records. The video features pleading vocals by Gospel Queens matched by gritty, roaring vocals by Shelton, strung by images of war and suffering. Shelton’s voice is a stand-alone instrument, as always, and Cold World draws from both gospel and classic R&B influences.
Though Shelton and The Queens are veterans, their most recent years in touring played a great role in the sound of their new album. Produced by Gabriel Roth, Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens headed into the studio to cut twelve (new) live tracks to an eight-track tape. The music, filled with familiar inspirational messages and uplifting spirituality, is truly and inherently soulful. Shelton’s voice commands attention. Warmed by heart-wrenching lyrics and coupled with the call and response melody of the Queens, sophomore album Cold World is filled unapologetic wisdom. To quote Naomi Shelton, ”My occupation is singing. My other occupation is going out in the field, helping others whatever way I can.”
Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens will be touring extensively, and you can catch them perform live at Rough Trade in Brooklyn on 7/29. The record release show is free and starts at 6:30pm. Watch the video for “Sinner” below.
