Marvin Gaye once sang, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.” Though this may be true for many things, Journey is a band that has seen many changes through the years – some of which haven’t been completely agreeable to some.
Steve Perry hasn’t been the leader singer of Journey for 26 years. Beyond their obvious physical differences, you’d be hard pressed not to hear Perry’s influence through the voice of Filipino singer, Arnel Pineda – now going on his seventh year with the band. Pineda, along with the rest of the band, gave a heartfelt performance at their Kansas City show at the Starlight Theater, spreading infectious smiles all around. Drummer, Deen Castronovo, took over vocal responsibilities on “Mother, Father,” which some might argue sounded better than the original. A personal favorite of the night was Schon’s patriotic version of John Stafford Smith’s “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Nothing truly says “America” like a riveting guitar solo.
The transition period is over. This is the new Journey. Take it or leave it.
